Not every person who gets Social Security gets the same amount of money each month. For instance, retirees generally get more money than people who get SSDI or SSI.
As of October 10, 2024, all Social Security benefits (retirement, SSI, SSDI, and more) will get a 2.5% COLA raise from the government. In other words, these Americans will get extra money starting in January 2025.
SSDI average payment after Social Security’s 2025 COLA
In August 2024, the average amount of money you get from Social Security Disability Insurance was about $1,539 per month. The average amount of this disability payment is expected to go up until December.
That’s why Social Security thinks it will reach $1,542 by December 2024. Then, when the new 2025 COLA is added, the average salary for people who get SSDI will be about $1,580 in January 2025.
The idea behind average payments is to give people who get them and people who want to get them an idea of what similar numbers might be. But this doesn’t mean you’ll get that much money. Disabled workers get different amounts of money. Some get less, while others get a lot more. This depends on your past jobs and how much money you make.
Other average payments SSDI recipients may be keen to know after COLA
There are times when a worker’s spouse or child can get Social Security disability payments based on their work history. It is always a good idea to ask SSA if this extra money can also be used by your family.
The most recent COLA Fact Sheet gives information on how much a worker with a disability, their spouse, and one or more children could get in Social Security payments each month.
Now that the COLA has gone up for 2025, their average SSDI salary will be about $2,826, up from $2,757. After the raise, the average check for partners of workers with disabilities will be about $421, which is 2.5% more than it was in August 2024. At the end of August 2024, the average check for kids was $492. This is without COLA.
