Seniors should now think about what kind of health care they will need in 2025. As 2024 comes to a close, it’s more important than ever to sign up for next year’s Medicare plan. The open enrollment time starts now and ends on December 7. That’s the good news. The bad news is that there is a lot to do before then.
Just under two months remain until beneficiaries have to choose the plan they want to join for next year. This means that seniors will need to think about their current plan, decide if it was a good fit for them, and research their options for next year.
It doesn’t make sense to pay for more coverage than you need, but you also don’t want to be in a mad dash to get care if you do. If you change your coverage during this time, the new plan will start on January 1, 2025. For the rest of the year, the plan you have now will have to do.
Open registration doesn’t mean that everyone who can get Medicare benefits has to sign up during that time. This year, some winners will even get to choose their own plans. People who are already registered in Medicare, either through an original Medicare plan or a private Medicare Advantage plan, or who are eligible for Medicare but not enrolled for any reason can sign up again during open enrollment.
Because you can start signing up for Medicare three months before your 65th birthday and stop three months after your birthday, some people who might be eligible for it fall through the cracks every year. For those who were without coverage for a few months, open enrollment is the time to make sure they have coverage for the next year.
There are some people with disabilities who can get Medicare, so not all recipients are over 65. However, most Medicare users (about 67 million) are older generations. This is why most Medicare Advantage programs are designed to help them, and this is also why the open enrollment time is so important.
However, experts have found that many beneficiaries are not wisely using this open enrollment time to weigh their options. Instead, they are renewing their plan without looking at any other options. If you are not smart about your coverage, you are hurting yourself.
There are different choices in each plan that could fit your lifestyle and coverage needs. Different people will have different needs when it comes to care, and some may need more help than others. These differences will have different effects on your wallet. It’s important that your coverage fits your specific wants.
How to enroll in the correct Medicare Advantage Plan
The Medicare website has a “Compare Plans in Your Area” tool that makes it easier to look at your choices. For this open enrollment, you can choose the coverage year, such as 2025, and then enter your ZIP code to see what plans are available in your area. Then you can look at these plans side by side and compare their prices to find the best one for your wants and budget.
There are three ways to sign up after you’ve picked out a plan that works for you. To sign up for the plan you want, all you have to do is click “Enroll” on Medicare’s online tool. It’s also possible to call the plan provider or print out and send a form.
There are some plans where you might also be able to sign up by calling the provider or their registration centers. Make sure you sign up before the open enrollment time ends, no matter what method you choose. If you don’t, the program will automatically put you in the original Medicare (Part A and Part B) plan.
