Four people were hurt by gunshots in the second NC. Central active shooter alarm during Durham's homecoming, officials said

Officials at North Carolina Central University said on Sunday that four people were hurt by gunfire during the university’s homecoming on Saturday night, when a second active shooter alert was sent out because of more gunshots.

At 7:43 p.m., there was an active shooter warning. At 8:11 p.m., the alert was lifted after an arrest, but just before 9 p.m., N.C. Central officials said they heard more gunfire.

Four people, including an NCCU student, were shot near the Student Services Building on Eagle Campus Drive late Sunday morning, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

The school was locked down until 11:48 p.m., when the NCCU Police Department gave the all-clear. Officials with N.C. Central said that the four people who were shot were taken to a nearby hospital to get help.

Police said there was no link between the two killings.

At 7:38 p.m., the first gunshot was heard in the parking lot of the Debra Saunders-White Residence Hall at 2103 Fayetteville St.

Central said there were many homecoming events on Saturday from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., the school’s homecoming football game against Morgan State began.

Officials said that the suspect in the first report of gunshots is now in police custody.

According to N.C. Central, there were “100 sworn law enforcement and uniformed security officers from multiple local and state agencies” on campus for the homecoming events on Saturday.

There is no information available about the person who is being held.
