For most seniors 70 and older renewing their licences, California is dropping the written driving test

Good news for Californians aged 70 and up: the DMV has said that these experienced drivers will no longer have to take the written test.

When has this change for 70-year-olds and older seniors in California begun?

From October 1, drivers aged 70 and up whose licences are not ending until 2024 or later will not have to take the written knowledge test. The DMV made this change as part of a new strategy. They want to make it clear that this is not a legal requirement.

The goal of the DMV’s plan is to speed up office visits. Steve Gordon, director of the DMV, said, “If thousands fewer people need to visit the DMV or can spend less time in an office, the people who need to do business in one of our offices can be better served.”

It’s important to know that people who have had bad driving records in the past will still have to take the written test.

For drivers aged 70 and up, they still need to go to the office to get their eyes checked and have a new picture taken when they renew their licence.
