Two adult children await word on whether their mother survived Hurricane Helene while defending her North Carolina home.
On Thursday, Kim Ashby informed her children, Chris and Jessica Meidinger, that she and Rod, who built the family’s new mountain home, had arrived in Elk Park, North Carolina. Since the couple built the house “a dozen feet higher than the highest past flood,” They didn’t expect much damage but wanted to be prepared.
The storm left Kim’s children wondering what happened until a neighbour informed them they spotted her house drifting down the river and shared a picture.
After, Kim’s husband told her children that they had tried to evacuate to higher ground during Friday’s Category 4 storm, but “it was already too late.” A mattress in the house collapsed on the couple and their three pets after hitting a river bank.
Rod and Kim clutched until they hit a tree.
