SCOTLAND COUNTY, N.C. — Two prisoners who ran away from the Scotland County Detention Center around 5 a.m. Monday have been caught, but the chief deputy for Scotland County, BJ Knight, says that the other two are still on the run.
Knight said that the prisoners beat out a window and used something that looked like a rope to get out of the building.
Scotland County Sheriff Ralph Kersey said that Phillip John Graham, 35, and Dedrick Lamar Williams, 33, are being actively searched for by officers. He also said that when they got away, both of the guys were wearing orange prison jumpsuits.
The search is also being done by U.S. Marshals.
Assaulting a government worker and forcing someone to have sex are the charges against Graham. Williams is accused of robbery with a dangerous weapon, theft, and attack on a woman.
Police say that 32-year-old James Ronnie Tyler, II, was hiding in a car near the jail when he was caught. He is now being charged with escape.
Knight said that the holding center is still locked down and that extra staff has been brought in to help out at the jail for now.
He also said that police have been checking the areas around the jail and following up on all leads and tips to find the prisoners who have gotten away.
A woman who said one of the suspects hurt her is now afraid to live her life. She asked that no one tell anyone her name.
“You know how many people sit in that jail house and try to escape and never success,” she added. These people kicked in the window, jumped through it, and used a rope to get through the wire and fence and out. They are still running. Wow, I should be scared too, not just me.
