The NC Elections Board will decide whether to accept digital IDs

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Tuesday is the first time that the North Carolina State Elections Board will decide if a digital copy of a student ID can be used as a picture voter ID.

In the past, the board has never agreed to a digital ID, but cell technology is getting better all the time. The actual student ID from the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill can already be used as a voter ID.

However, Republican State Elections Board Member Stacy Eggers did not want the digital version to be included, which led to the formal vote on Tuesday.

At the moment, a student ID can be used at Duke, UNC, North Carolina State, and East Carolina University.

The question isn’t just about college campuses either. At least 11 states have digital driver’s licenses, according to ZDNET. These are Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, and Utah.

Most likely, state politicians will decide in 2025 if digital licenses can be used at the polls.
