The JV Raiders win their third game in a row to end their non-conference schedule

CHARLOTTE — The Richmond junior varsity football team scored enough points on offense to win Thursday thanks to another strong defensive game.

The JV Raiders beat Myers Park High School 0–0 on the road to end their non-conference schedule with a win that made it three wins in a row.

The JV Mustangs lost to Richmond 13-0, giving Richmond its second win of the season.

It was the JV Raiders’ first score of the game, and they added another in the fourth quarter to make it 2-0.

The whole week, head coach Patrick Hope said, “our goal was to play our best game of the season on the road against another Charlotte school.” “We knew there would be problems, and we dealt with them head-on.”

“We got a solid win thanks to all three phases.” They worked hard to get added to the rotation on offense and defense, which gives our team more strength. Their quarterback was under a lot of pressure from our defensive line and defenders, and they couldn’t run the ball much, so they had to pass.

There are four sophomores and a rookie at center on our offensive line, but they are playing well together as an experienced group, Hope said. “They made a lot of room for the running game and kept the quarterbacks safe when we chose to throw.”

On the first set of the game, the JV Raiders’ defense forced a three-and-out. On its third play from scrimmage, Richmond scored a touchdown.

With a handoff from sophomore quarterback BJ Hinson, rookie running back Ty Covington got going and scored on the ground from 67 yards out.

Covington used his speed to get past five players as he ran up the middle, which gave him plenty of room for the last 20 yards down the left sideline to the house.

The point-after kick was made by freshman Jake Gardner, making the score 7-0.

Frosh running back Donovan Jones got another long touchdown run in the fourth quarter, giving the Raiders a two-possession lead. It was good for 53 yards, and the two-point conversion try failed.

Myers Park could only get 73 yards of offense against the JV Raiders. Richmond was good on late downs, stopping 8 out of 9 third downs and 4 out of 5 fourth-down attempts.

Keith Cummings, a sophomore defender, had three tackles for loss, a quarterback sack, and three pass breakups, which were the most on his team.

Andrea Streeter and Adan King, two other sophomores, also put pressure on her. King blocked two pass attempts, and Streeter got a quarterback hit and two TFL.

A field goal effort from Myers Park was stopped by sophomore Alijah Flowers at the end of the first half.

Jeremiah Covington, a sophomore, had two quarterback hits and a tackle for loss. Messiah Marshall, a freshman, finished off the defense with one drag drown for a loss.

Hope ended, “This is our best start to a JV season since 2019.” “We’ve won three straight games and scored 65 goals compared to 15 for our opponents. We’ve also shut out two teams.”

«Our goal is to win the conference. The first step we will take is to play at home next week.

The JV Raiders (3-1) will play Southern Lee High School (2-1) at home next Thursday to start Sandhills Athletic Conference play. The game is set to start at 6:30 p.m.
