As a result, all beneficiaries who created an online account before September 18, 2021, will need to switch to a Login.gov account going forward. This is because the Login.gov account lets recipients use the same personal information to access other government accounts.
In the past, recipients could use their email address instead of their Social Security username to log in. The government office has also said that these accounts will be closed starting in September 2024. But remember that if you already have an ID.me or Login.gov account, there’s nothing else you need to do.

It is necessary to create a new account and link it to your existing account as part of the transfer process. When the screen of confirmation appears, you will be able to access it after completing the instructions.
It’s important to note that some recipients may not find the transfer process choice right away because the Social Security Administration just started the process. Look for your account, and if you can’t find it, call SSA customer service.

A spokesman from the Social Security Administration told CNET that more than 46 million of the 86 million users who still need to switch to Login.gov accounts by June 2024. Legacy accounts haven’t been told when they have to switch to Login.gov accounts yet because the change is still in its early stages.

Online access is safe and private right now, but soon, all of our customers will need an account with one of our two Credential Service Providers (CSP) in order to access other online services, like their Social Security account.
Another government agency that has switched to the Login.gov service is the Office of Personal Management. The Small Business Administration and the Department of Homeland Security are also in the process of doing the same.
