The Latin American community’s main goal of the non-profit La Fuerza NC is to get more people involved in local government.
On Sunday, the group sent people to La Fiesta Del Pueblo in downtown Raleigh to help sign up people to vote.
Gaby Garcia-Vera, Deputy Executive Director of La Fuerza NC, said that in North Carolina, they are the least represented in the government.
“The people in charge don’t look like us.” She said, “They don’t sound like us.” “For us, it’s about doing our part to make sure that our people are not only seen but counted and heard in the same way that they want to listen.”
ABC11 also talked to Alberto Hernandez, a worker for La Fuerza NC who works hard to teach, register, and give more people the power to vote.
“A lot of our community is scared to vote just because (of) some of the local repercussions of what’s been going on with the political, future of everything but it is super important to anybody listening to make sure that if you can get to the polls, get to the polls,” said Hernandez.
If people in North Carolina want to vote on November 5, they have until October 11 to sign up to do so.
From October 17 to November 2, you can vote early. During this time, you can register the same day.
