North Carolina broke the record for returning leftover money for the fourth year in a row.
The North Carolina Department of State Treasurer says that the Unclaimed Property Division (UPD) returned more than $115 million to the people who were supposed to get it.
UPD Deputy Treasurer Allen Martin said, “Our hardworking team of professionals made it possible for us to have another record year in terms of receipts and claims paid.”
For many reasons, money that can’t be delivered is kept safe at the department until its true owners can claim it. There is more than a billion dollars ready to be claimed right now.
UPD has paid out $610.5 million on 885,691 claims since 2017.

The department said that the unclaimed property includes old bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, insurance policy money, stocks, bonds, and the items of safe deposit boxes that people have forgotten about.
