You might want to study for the test if you need to update your North Carolina driver’s license soon.
For up to two years after their expiration dates, the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles says that driver IDs can be renewed online or at a self-service kiosk (there are a few in Raleigh and Charlotte). It has to be done in person at an NCDMV office after that.
NCDMV says that drivers can only renew their licenses online every other time. If you renewed your license online the last time, you’ll need to go to a driver license office to do it again.
Are there any tests you need to pass to keep your NC license?
The NCDMV told The Charlotte Observer in an email that you have to take a vision and road sign knowledge test when you renew your license in person.
NCDMV says that applicants for the road sign knowledge test must be able to tell the difference between regulatory and warning signs based on color and shape and give an explanation for each one.
Who has to renew their license in-person in NC?
NCDMV says other groups who have to renew their licenses in personinclude those who:
- Have a suspended license or outstanding debt with NCDMV
- Have a restriction other than “Corrective Lenses” on their driver license and/or “24” on their full provisional license
- Need to renew a commercial driver licenses, regular Class A or B driver license, limited provisional license, limited learner permit or learner permit
- Have a U.S. government document indicating legal presence
How to renew an expired license in-person in NC
You can update your license online or make an appointment at ncdot.gov/dmv.
To renew a license that has been lost or stolen, you will need to show two forms of identification. These can be a birth certificate, a passport, or your social security card.
You have up to six months to renew your license before it runs out.
How much does it cost to renew your license in NC?
There is a $16.75 fee for license renewals.
