Disability Benefits Update – The 3 New Checks To Be Paid in September

Disability Benefits Update – The 3 New Checks To Be Paid in September

For people who are eligible for disability benefits, three new checks will be mailed in the next few weeks. Some people have already gotten their monthly benefits. The Social Security Administration sends disabled people four payments a month, based on when they first applied for benefits and when they were born.

The first payment is always sent on the third of the month, unless that day is a weekend. People who received disability benefits before May 1997 can get this payment. All beneficiaries will get their checks on the same day, no matter what date they were born.

After this payment, the SSA plans to send three more payouts to disabled people who applied for disability benefits after May 1997. Based on their birth dates, these people will get their monthly checks in a way that makes the payments more spread out. The SSA says that disabled people born between January 1st and October 10th get their checks on the second Wednesday of each month.

Disabled people born between January 11th and October 20th get their checks on the third Wednesday of each month. Last but not least, people who were born between July 21 and July 31 will get their benefits on the fourth Wednesday of every month.

Disability benefits can range between $1,537 and $3,822 per month

The Social Security Administration chooses different monthly payment amounts each year based on a number of factors, such as the amount of work experience and Social Security paid while working. People who are disabled and made enough contributions to Social Security before they got disabled can get up to $1,537 a month from the program.

Besides this standard payment, the SSDI program gives out different amounts of money depending on the kind of condition and the average amount of money that person has paid into the system. For instance, the SSA says that blind people who meet their criteria can get disability benefits of $2,590 per month. People who paid taxes based on the highest taxable earnings could get up to $3,822 per month.

Also, keep in mind that the annual raise from the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) is already built into these monthly benefits. This is usually confirmed in October at the end of the year. The COLA is set at 3.2% right now, but new figures show that it might be less than that next year.

A study by The Senior Citizens League (TSCL) says that the COLA for 2025 could be anywhere from 2.6% to 3%. Here is a guess of how much your disability payments will go up if the COLA for next year is set at 2.63 or 3.2%:

Disability benefits Social Security checks 2.63% COLA increase 3.2% COLA increase
On average $1,537 $1,577 $1,586
Blind recipients $2,590 $2,658 $2,673
Maximum payment $3,822 $3,923 $3,944
