North Carolina, USA — As hunting season begins in North Carolina, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office warns of an increase in rural gunshots.
Deputies expect the uptick to coincide with hunting seasons.
- Dove season: Beginning Sept. 2 and will continue in phases until Jan. 31, 2025.
- Duck hunting: Beginning on Oct. 17 and will run in stages through the end of Jan.
- Deer hunting: Beginning on Nov. 2, with hunters participating until Jan. 1, 2025.
- Additionally, small game season for animals such as squirrels, rabbits, raccoons, opossums, and bobcats will open on Oct. 14 and extend through Feb. 28, 2025.
Residents are being told by deputies to be aware of what’s going on in their neighborhoods and to stay quiet if they hear gunshots, especially in rural or wooded areas.
The Sheriff’s Office tells hunters that they should follow all of North Carolina’s shooting laws and hunt safely and responsibly.
