As the FBI raids his home, reports say an ex-Orange County judge shoots and kills himself

Stewart Rosenwasser, a retired judge and former executive assistant district attorney for Orange County, killed himself with a gun at his home in Campbell Hall on Tuesday after a shootout with FBI agents, according to several government sources.

In a statement, the FBI said, “The FBI is reviewing an agent-involved shooting that happened earlier this morning in Campbell Hall.” When our agents are shot, the FBI takes it very seriously. Following FBI policy, the killing is being looked into by the FBI’s Inspection Division.

A source says that shots were fired at Rosenwasser’s home on Route 416 while agents were trying to arrest him because the federal government was investigating him for tax fraud.

Last week that the former official was also being sued for $22.5 million for reportedly taking bribes to prosecute a crypto currency case last year during a fight between family members who are linked to a murder in Rockland County that has never been solved.

Rosenwasser worked as a lawyer for many years. For many years, he worked as a private lawyer. In the 1970s, he was an assistant district attorney in Orange County. He was a judge in Orange County Court and an acting justice on the Supreme Court for six years.

In 2019, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office hired him again as a special counsel for policy study to help with discovery reform. He quit without warning in June of last year, saying he wanted to “retire from the practice of law.”

This past week, papers were filed in the legal case against Rosenwasser and the county. The office of the district attorney says that other cases that the former lawyer worked on were looked at and nothing wrong was found.
