Millions of people who get Social Security will soon have to use a new login method to keep getting to their online account information. The Social Security Administration (SSA) just recently said that people who made their My Social Security accounts before September 18, 2021, will need to switch to a Login.gov account in order to keep using online services.
The SSA says that everyone will need either a Login.gov or ID.me account to get to their Social Security information and other online services that are connected. Over 5 million account holders have already switched to the new system using two-step authentication and don’t need to make a new account.
However, about 46 million users still haven’t made the switch to Login.gov, and they don’t have much time left before the deadline that the SSA has tentatively set for September.
Reasons to make the swap of the My Social Security account
A spokesperson for the SSA said that the shift is still in its early stages and that the agency’s main goal right now is to let people know about these changes.
A spokesperson said, “We are just starting this transition process, and our main goal right now is to let everyone know about these upcoming changes. Because of this, we have not set a final deadline for these remaining accounts to move to Login.gov.”
The process will be easy for people who already have a My Social Security account and are ready to make the switch. They will be able to switch to Login.gov when they log in with their current passwords.
Once they choose this choice, they will get a message letting them know that their account has been linked successfully. Users will still be able to access their personal My Social Security services at this point, and the change will go as smoothly as possible.
There is what the SSA calls a “customer service crisis,” and they hope that this change will help solve it. One of the biggest problems the office has is that people have to wait a long time to talk to someone on the phone.
To give you an idea, the average wait time for people calling the SSA’s 800 number was about 24 minutes in April, down from 42 minutes in November. By the end of September 2025, the government hopes to cut this wait time down to about 32 minutes.
In a statement made last week, Martin O’Malley, the Commissioner of Social Security and main supporter of the changes the agency is making, stressed how important this change was.
He told them, “My Social Security is a safe way for people to do business with us.” We are happy to switch to Login.gov for accessing our online services. This will make the process easier for the people across all agencies.
The My Social Security accounts are free for people who are already getting benefits and for people who aren’t getting benefits yet. People can use these accounts to apply for and handle their benefits, get new Social Security cards, get an idea of how much money they will get in the future, and see the status of their benefit applications.
Moving to Login.gov is part of a larger attempt by the SSA to improve security and the user experience so that people can interact with the agency more easily.
As the transition goes on, the SSA should keep the public up to date with more specific directions and dates to help make sure that the process goes smoothly for everyone. In the beginning, the focus is on making people aware of the change, but the agency will probably set a final date for the change in the future.
The people who are affected should switch to Login.gov and get used to the new system right away so they don’t have any problems getting to their Social Security payments and services.
