A lot of North Carolina is covered in thick smoke from wildfires in California and Canada

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — Parts of North Carolina had cloudy skies all day Monday because smoke from wildfires moved into the state.

CBS 17 analyst Wes Hohenstein says that smoke is coming down from wildfires in Canada and other fires in the western US.

On Tuesday, the haze from the smoke is likely to return to central North Carolina.

Satellites from NASA showed that there was a layer of smoke in the upper atmosphere.

NASA pictures show that there was a clear line of smoke from Raleigh to the coast at Corolla on the Outer Banks in Currituck County.

Smoke could also be seen in the sky west of Raleigh and all the way into Virginia.

“That’s what made it look like Carolina Grey instead of Carolina Blue,” Hohenstein said. “Some of that haze might come back tomorrow.”

On Monday, a fire in California along the edge of the San Bernardino National Forest, about 65 miles east of Los Angeles, threatened thousands of homes and businesses. The fire had already burned 37 square miles.
