A big new change has been announced by Social Security – There You Have It!

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is making big changes to how people apply for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). These changes are meant to make the application process easier for Americans who are qualified, especially disabled people and older adults who depend on SSI for money.

People have said that the current application process is hard to understand. The SSA plans to fix these problems with a new, better application that will be released in December.

People with disabilities and seniors with limited income can get regular financial help from SSI, but many people have trouble applying because the process is so complicated. The SSA is making a new, improved application that will be accessible online because they know that the current method is not very user-friendly.

As a whole, government programs are moving toward easier-to-use digital tools. This is a change that many people, including Alex Beene, a financial literacy teacher at the University of Tennessee at Martin, think has been needed for a long time.

In an interview with Newsweek, Beene said, “In the past few years, we’ve seen more government-funded benefit programs switch to easier-to-use software, which is a very good thing.”

Americans are used to forms being as simple and easy to fill out as possible online for almost all other purposes as well. If programs like SSI don’t change faster, fewer people may be able to get through the process and get the benefits they need.

The Social Security Administration rollout for the new SSI application

The new, fully online application will be for first-time applicants between the ages of 18 and almost 65 who have never been married and are applying for both SSI and Social Security payments at the same time. As the SSA put it, the new app is based on “user-tested, plain-language questions” and “seamless step-by-step transitions.”

The goal of these features is to make the application process much faster and the decision-making process for first claims much shorter. According to Government Executive, this is a big step up from the present paper-based application, which takes about two hours to finish with help from an SSA employee.

This online form is just the beginning of what the SSA wants to do. The second part, which is set to start in late 2025, will make the new system available to all SSI applicants. This will have a bigger effect. The SSA has been open in asking for ideas on how to make the application process easier for people to use.

Over the past year, they’ve talked to applicants, advocates, and SSA workers to find out how to make the application process easier and better. “Over the past year, we’ve asked a lot of clients, advocates, and employees how we could make the SSI application process easier and faster.”

Today, we are taking a big first step to make that happen, said Martin O’Malley, who is in charge of Social Security. He said that making the application process easier and less time-consuming was very important.

He also said, “People in our communities who need this important safety net deserve the dignity of an application process that is easier and less time-consuming than what we now have, and we’re committed to achieving that vision over the next few years.”

Even with these positive changes, the SSA faces a big problem: the Social Security program might not be able to pay its bills. The most recent report from the Trustees says that if nothing is done, the funds for full benefit payouts could run out by 2033. All present beneficiaries could see their benefits cut by 17% because of this situation.

But O’Malley is hopeful that this problem can be fixed. He said, “Social Security will face a 17 percent benefit shortfall for all of our beneficiaries currently in payment status if Congress doesn’t act.” The good news is that this issue can be fixed.
