Fans of TCU got to see new defensive coach Andy Avalos for the first time when the Frogs lost the coin toss and had to play defense. Four times, the Horned Frogs had third-down chances, but they either got a facemask or an unnecessary roughness call.
Stanford would drop the ball but pick it back up, making it first and goal. With just over eight minutes left, the score was Stanford 7 and TCU 0. Not bad for the Horned Frogs.
When the Horned Frogs got the ball back, they would do what they do best, which is quick catches and inside runs that score 8 or more yards.
Savion Williams quickly let everyone know that he was there. It was Josh Hoover’s six-yard fade pass that made it 7-7 with 1:16 left in the game. It was TCU’s first touchdown of the season.
END OF THE FIRST QUARTER: STANFORD 7, TCU 7
After some very well-planned blitzes by Andy Avalos, the new-look defense made their first stop of the day. This gave the offense the ball with 13:20 left in the second quarter.
It wouldn’t be long for the attacking drive. When TCU’s John Paul Richardson lost the ball on their own 21, Stanford would take over in great field position.
The defense played great in the red zone and stopped Stanford on fourth down. Stanford then chose to go for it on fourth and goal, leaving the Horned 14–7 down with 9:19 to play.
With 5:27 left in the game, TCU would give the ball to Stanford and march the length of the field to the 27-yard line. On fourth down, they would go for it, but failed, giving the ball back to Stanford.
After Tymon Mitchell caught a blocked pass for a TCU interception on the next play, Stanford learned that college football is a game of give and take. They turned the ball over.
It was hard for TCU to get going, and they were shimmed in the red zone. They had to settle for a field goal, which was made by freshman Kyle Lemmerman. With just over four minutes to play, the score was Stanford 14, TCU 10.
With just under two minutes left, the Horned Frogs’ defense stepped up, led by cornerbacks Jamel Johnson and JaTravis Broughton. They held Stanford to a field goal, which made the score Stanford 17, TCU 10 with 1:37 left.
TCU was moving down the field, but with 13 seconds left in the half, they lost the ball because Hoover and Cam Cook messed up the snap.
