The Social Security Administration says that Survivor benefits pay benefits every month to family members of people who worked and paid taxes but died. In other words, if your partner worked and paid taxes to SSA, they may give you monthly survivor benefits after your spouse dies.
Who can get Social Security survivor benefits?
Keep in mind that these regular payments are not easy to get to. So, only certain family members can get rewards for the death of a loved one. Here is the full list of family members that the government lets get benefits:
- dependent parent
- divorced spouse
- child
- spouse
For your information, the worker must have paid enough payroll taxes to Social Security before he or she passed away.

Can Social Security survivor benefits qualify you for other benefits?
For some people who get Social Security, the government says they may also get Medicare in addition to their monthly payment. Of course, on the person who died’s work experience. There are some things you may need to report once you start getting survivor payments.
For instance, you need to report any changes to your personal information, pay, or work. All too often, a burial home will tell the SSA that a worker has died. But I’m pretty sure they do offer that service.
