Social Security Reform: A Key Issue in the 2024 Election

Trump and Harris Avoid Discussing the Future of Social Security

CNNNow says that as the 2024 election gets closer, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, two major party leaders, are avoiding talking about how to change Social Security, which leaves a hole in the conversation. Because the program doesn’t have enough money, benefits will have to be cut in about ten years if Congress doesn’t do something. However, neither Trump nor Harris have come up with an answer yet.

Democrats have put forward a number of plans to deal with the problem, such as raising the retirement income cap and adding more tax breaks for high earners. Republicans, on the other hand, have spoken out against these ideas and not given many clear alternatives. This has left many people wondering what their plans are for the future of the program. The Republican Party Platform says they won’t cut benefits or raise the retirement age, but it doesn’t say how they plan to make up the difference in funding.

Social Security Recipients Face Uncertainty as Election Day Approaches

The lack of a clear plan from both parties is leaving many Social Security recipients concerned about their future. As one advocacy group president put it, “Will [Republicans] go behind closed doors and have a package that has some cuts? Or will they do it out in the open and do what the Democrats want to do? I think that’s what’s really at stake.” With Election Day just 99 days away, it’s unclear what the future holds for Social Security, leaving millions of Americans wondering what will happen to their benefits.
