In 2023, some archaeologists found a hidden cache of gold coins. It looks like it could help change the course of war history. This is because the hidden gold shows the money schemes that the fights were about.
Just so you know, this hidden stash of gold coins comes from the time before Christ. Also, it was found by archaeologists in Turkey. That being said, they were put in what most likely was a Hellenic house.
Why were these coins kept?
The experts think that this money was hidden to pay off hired guns. These people say that this money was needed when the Persian and Athens armies were fighting.
The gold coins were found in Notion, an ancient Greek city. So, the armies need a lot of cash to pay the hired forces. There’s no question that the service wasn’t cheap at the time.
They had saved enough money to pay for the cost of a hired army. Archaeologists found the gold coins in a small pot in what is now western Turkey. It was like something out of a movie.
Who led the research of this gold coins discovery?
The Notion Archaeological Survey was in charge of it. It was actually the project that found the gold coins and the person whose job it was to look into them.
Though the discovery happened in 2023, it was kept hidden until the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism gave the go-ahead for it to be made public. Some experts from the University of Michigan said the coins show an archer on his knees.
The people who kept the coins couldn’t get the wealth back because they were meant for war. So, a terrible accident must have happened to keep them from getting this money back. One daric was enough to pay a soldier for one month.
