Wisconsin to Join Federal Direct File Program for Free Online Tax Filing in 2025

New System Expected to Save Millions and Enhance User Experience for State Taxpayers

According to WISCONSIN EXAMINERWisconsin taxpayers will soon have a new and affordable way to file their state and federal income tax returns. Wisconsin will join the government Direct File program in 2025. This program lets people file their taxes online for free. This year, the IRS started this program as a test run in 12 states. Next year, they plan to make it available all across the country. People in Wisconsin will first use a federal filing portal set up by the IRS and then switch to a new Wise Tax site set up by the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.

In its first year the Direct File program has already helped people save over $90 million in tax refunds and about $5.6 million in tax processing fees. Residents of Wisconsin will be able to save money and have an easier, more accurate time filing their taxes now that the state is part of the program. The state Department of Revenue is happy about this new system because they think it will make filing taxes better for everyone because it is free, easy to use, and quick.
