The 1943 Copper Penny is one of the rarest coins that people may still have. What makes this 1943 Copper Penny so unique? The US Mint explains. They say that the American Numismatic Association said it was one of the most sought-after coins, which is true.
Back then, most pennies were made from zinc-coated steel, which is why this is such an important piece of history. Remember that nickel and copper were important to the war effort of the Allies.
How many 1943 Copper Penny coins exist?
The U.S. Mint says there might be forty of them. At least they know that this number exists. It looks like they were hit by accident, or at least that’s what experts think. It’s possible that “copper–alloy 1-cent blanks were still in the press hopper when production on the new steel” coins began.
Just so you know, the first 1943 Copper Penny that was sold was in 1958. It hit an amazing $40,000 back then. There was, however, a more recent and bigger sale.
Also, the U.S. Mint says it sold for $82,500 in 1996, which is 28 years ago. What about the other two coins? They are also very expensive and are still used today. It might be worth a lot more in 2024 if it was worth that much years ago.
2 other valuable coins still in circulation
The second one is the Double Die Penny from 1955. Victor David Brenner and the Philadelphia mint came up with the idea for this coin. It was 95% copper and 5% tin and zinc. There were about 33,058,000 claims PCGS made. Date and lettering that are twice as big are what fans love about it.
A record $32,400 was paid at the sale. This 1955 Double Die Penny is being auctioned off, and the price is very interesting. The price to buy it is $3,720. Of course, prices may change based on how long it lasts.
Finally, the 1969-S Doubled Die Penny is the third coin that is still used today. It might make you think of the last example in some way. You can read the words and dates again. Look at these coins.
